Is light pollution killing our birds??

Public enemy No. 1

Read the Challenge pdf - "Is Light Pollution Killing Our Birds?"

The article above is from Challenge magazine, Sunner 2006. Three years on, Summer 2009, things have changed. People now think that turning off UNNECESSARY light at night is a GOOD idea. At last the penny is dropping?

BTW we have a Late Breaking News segway a few scrolls down this page. Please give it a coat of looking at. Thanks. BTW does anyone know how to contact Catherine Egan, who helped start Earth Hour?

Light Pollution - The Problem. Dr John Mason's  video's excerpt. The full video is at Brian May's site.

Astronomers use the term ‘light pollution’ or LP (sometimes also called light at night or LAN) to describe the effect of artificial night lighting obscuring the stars. But there are other consequences too - the insidious “hidden” effect that it has on insects at the base of the food chain, on other animals and on people. Artificial light at night enables  humans to live, work and play for 24 hours a day.  Professor Fred Watson, author of “Why Is Uranus Upside Down?", gives his thoughts on light pollution and astronomy but he also expresses the wider concerns to be found here and in other web pages. BTW the first UK Dark Sky sites have been inaugurated in Scotland. -- Go to Late Breaking below for latest news.

"Blinded by the Light?" The new CfDS handbook. A snip at only £3. !) The "problem" of the night sky and WASTED light, 2) the "hidden" harm of LP/LAN, 3) lighting and crime (which is NOT prevented), 4) human health problem with LP/LAN, 5) energy and money waste and 6) what you can do.

Could Our Lights Actually Go Out......? If you are a media journalist wanting further information about LP/LAN and environmental issues of "import"(?) then please click HERE

Francis Parnell suggested - 'Since the "natural environment" after sunset is darkness, maybe we should call it what it really is - night pollution.'  Is the 24 hour day killing off "Life On Earth"?  It appears that National Geographic agree with some aspects of these concepts? BTW LP/LAN is killing biodiversity in Old Saigon? Now known as Ho Chi Minh City.

This movie, of LP in the US of A,  from 1950 thru 2025, is fantastic HERE. Just scroll a little bit down the page to access the movie. The webmaster has created an (inferior) version for Europe HERE. Please excuse the political irony at the video end.

The City "Domes" of Wasted Energy Which Should Be Charging Our EVs

BTW here in the UK on More 4 TV (31Mar09) you can watch WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR? by Chris Paine.  Please watch it in the context of the URL above about EVs. As I watch it now (1015 pm) you realise just how advanced the EV1 was. Maybe this was its failure. FORD and GM management were just dinosaurs. You can buy the DVD here in the UK for only £4.99 P+P free.

The WWF want feedback from YOU about what YOU did for (World) Earth Hour. - --- IYA 2009 ---- Globe at Night year. Please join in. in 2009.

Lights Out Across the UK for WWF's World Earth Hour. Did YOU join in? If not then why not?

This is what the Parthenon, Athens did for Earth Hour. Nice to see it as it was intended to be?

BTW I wore the 2008 Earth Hour  T Shirt in the Gobi Desert during the total solar eclipse.

The Luxor Sky beam - Even the Luxor Las Vegas resort's soaring beam of light, often said to be visible from space, left the desert sky eerily black. [Many thanks Ron {Lutsock} - Graham]. More about the Luxor, Las Vegas and (World) Earth Hour here.

Kansas City faces the future with confidence and starts with (World) Earth Hour - the video statement.

The Herald News reports on Homer Glen and Lockport, Il., joining (World) Earth Hour.

ComEd (Chicago) said that Earth Hour was a success - well done Homer Glen and ALL your colleagues, including Congresswoman Biggert.

BLINDED BY THE LIGHT?  The CfDS hanbook describing the wider consequencies of the 24 hour day. You may have already read the frontispiece. Now you can buy the handbook itself.  Available from The CfDS, c/o 38 The Vineries, Colehill, Wimborne, Dorset, BH21 2PX, United Kingdom. Here in the UK the unit price is about £3 per copy, including post and packaging.

A very big thank you to this web site's visitors. You have HIT this site about 43,221 times since September 2006 when I created it. Pleaae tell your friends about the hidden "passive" harm caused by light at night. The hit rate now is back to the summer low of nearly 40 hits per day (38.9 today 2nd July 2009 - the Summer Solstice has passed, - Winter rolls on)) after World Earth Hour. You were hitting it during  Earth Hour over ~1200 times a day. Everyone has been joining in. Most of the increase has been because of EARTH HOUR itself. The whole world was joining in - DID YOU?  Pull the "switch" at the top RHS of this page. Please tell the WWF if YOU joined in with (World) Earth Hour and tell your friends? Moreover  tell others why turning OFF UNNECESSARY, repeat UNNECESSARY, light at night is good for everyone and good for Life, the Universe and Everything. If we do not then maybe LAN will become the "new"asbestos? (It has already been the "new" DDT for 112 years?). With massive, unnecessary, litigation cases wasting more money. You will learn the many (and varied) reasons why if you buy the CfDS handbook "Blinded by the Light?" detailed above. It only costs £3 quid with UK postage. Dr George Beaumont, a sleep deprivation expert, has stated that it is a very important contribution to the debate. If you have not read it then clearly you will not be well enough informed? Dr. Barry Clark thinks that light at night (LAN) is the "New Asbestos". Do you agree with him? Maybe as circadian disruption kills you will agree?

Living today the future that was predicted in 1994? - " Lights (at night) could well eliminate insects over a large area. As the insect population declines, this will have an effect on the predators higher up in the food chain which feed on them. This would include many birds, lizards and frogs and small mammals (including bats). These effects would be above and beyond those already caused by loss of habitat through urbanisation. Many insects are pollinators of flowering plants, so as the insect population goes down the number of flowers successfully pollinated may also decline. This will lead to fewer plants and less plant diversity in years to come. Since many insects feed on plants the size of the insect population will further decline as we have fewer plants.
Light pollution is therefore a “green” issue and those organisations concerned about the environment, as well as the astronomical community, should be involved in combating the problem.    Colin Henshaw, a letter to the JBAA, May, 1994.

Insects are the primary food source for many predators (such as bats, birds, lizards and frogs), and their decline has a serious knock-on effect for other creatures.

A similar observation was made in September 1897 - YES that is right September 1897 acording to the LA Times. (Information courtesy of Dr. Travis Longcore, Urban Wildlands Group, California, USA). You can read the transcript as a DOC file HERE.

The decline in amphibian populations as reported in Wikipedia.

 <- -  LATE BREAKING NEWS  -  ->

Do you live anywhere near the Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Reserve, Ontario, Canada?  Do you know of the upcomimg dark sky meeting there Saturday, 17 October, 2009? (This will involve the Muskoka Heritage Foundation, which hosted a meeting in 2003,  "The Ecology Of The Night".) Stargazers welcome at this 10th anniversary celebration and they may well learn the "hidden" harm of the LAN that kills their hobby in cities.

Gosh - Sea Ice Lowest In 800 Years In Greenland. So climate change really is happening? And BTW "Species Pledge To Fail: Conservationists". Nothing new here then?

HUGE DECLINES IN WOODLAND BIRDS - BBC NEWS.     The nightingale has effectively vamished from woodlands across the UK....its populations have fallen more than 95%! So nothing new there then? Of course it is ONLY coincidence that the night has gone now with the modern 24 hour day. Is light pollution killing off Life On Earth?

North America the worst light polluted country in the world - Sky & Telescope.

Increasing atmospheric aerosols - dust - speeds melting of the ice. Once again more evidence that we will be JTL? Maybe these "dusts" include diesel UFPs? It makes you think.

New in the USA - The Clean Energy and Security Act, 2009. Absolutely NOTHING about energy conservation and waste contraint. Another waste of time? Does anyone know? We are on a train headlong into a JTL future - trust me - that future is around the next bend.

This from the Pic du Midi and the BBC "..unless cities reduce their night time lighting it will soon become nearly impossible to observe the stars at night." What an amazing observation. Don't forget that LAN is also killing off Life On Earth? BTW I had a friend, Pete Ritman, who once worked at the Pic du Midi in the Pyrenees.

Would you like to see the night sky and its LAN/LP from anywhere in Britain? Well you can by clicking HERE This clever interactive animation is from Need-Less. The UK LP animation web site.

My web site tracking software has posted a site from 2008, in which John Ehinger remarked that "In Britain, some birds may be declining" - well June 2009 we added the cuckoo and lapwing. How many more will need to decline before the "hidden" effect of LAN/LP is realised as being harmful?

Sky & Telescope US Physicians Join Light Pollution Fight - Yes! Read that ".....many species (including humans) need darkness to survive and thrive." Thanks to Dr. Mario Motta of NELPAG.

From Friedel Pas (IDA Europe) on the NYAS meeting "Circadian Disruption and Cancer". His information is that "....the conference was excellent." I just hope that we can get a full report eventually? It is a great pity that the media don't give a damn. Friedel tells me that "Dr. Blask and Dr. Brainard think that LAN, under whicch light levels most poeple sleep, will have (a big) effect on Melatonin levels." We will see but I just hope that we will be JIT and not JTL?

LP is a problem in South Africa too. Please add your comments.

World Must Strive For A "Green Economy": UN. No chance - bankers, economists, politicians and  accountants don't want this world ruled by "hair shirt environmentalists". The boss of Ryanair would simply shoot them. Commonsense sustainable advocacy would affect his profits? It's dead simple to turn off UNNECESSARY light at night. A simple step for man, a giant leap for mankind. Where have I heard that before? Must be real old.

No reports so far about Friday's NYAS meeting Circadian Disruption and Cancer. However I have found this from late 2007 - Meeting Report: The Role of Environmental Lighting and Circadian Disruption in Cancer and Other Diseases.

BBC WebSite News - Bats Avoid Flying By Streetlights - I wonder WHY?.  Could there be some "mysterious" reason? As environmental journalists believe.

Golly gosh -  news from the Guardian, today 18 Jun 2009 Street lights threaten survival of bats. This research by Emma Stone and Gareth Jones, University of Bristol, UK. The paper itself in  Science Direct online.

Climate catasrophe getting closer, warn scientists. We really seem to be heading toward that JTL future and NOT the JIT future that we need?

UK to map climate change interactively (BBC 18 Jun 2009). So that YOU can predict how bad it will be for you in your future. It would be nicer if they actually did something about climate change. Do't forget that in Bled in 2007 it was stated that "Light pollution contributes a great deal to global warming. This is another reason to stop it. Light pollution requires taking measures just as global warming does. Clear and efficient action of the European Union is required, here and now!" Or we will be JTL and yet we really want to be JIT? Our slogan with LP/LAN should be - JIT AND NOT JTL!

JUST WHAT THE DOCTORS ORDERED!  The American Medical Association officially supports LIGHT POLLUTION REDUCTION.    Resolution 516 - Advocating and Support for Light Pollution Control Efforts and Glare Reduction for Both Public Safety and Energy Savings.  Now they are talking. Today Friday 19 June 2009  the NYAS meeting to discuss Circadian Disruption and Cancer.

How the scientists see the future USA? Manhatton floods, Chicago heatwaves and withering California vines. Neat huh? No - sad that we may be JTL already.

At last the RUV EV! The Responsible Utility Vehicle - the Electric Vehicle from Smith Electric Vehicles, and not just an exciting go faster like the Tesla Sports Roadster. A utility vehicle that will be able to use the energy wasted creating UNNECESSARY light at night. Low running costs - plug in and go - zero emissions. With Li-ion battery packs (and not SLA) and regenerative breaking. The future is here today? But the future for the Zero Carbon Car is still in the hands of politicians and NOT engineers.

White House: Climate Change Happening Now. Golly gosh - can you believe it? It cannot be true can it? Wake up World, it IS happening all around you and no one cares.  I just hope that your megacity does not suffer a megadisaster. They are closer than you think. And don't blame me just because I told you so.

Act now on global warming, US Government report urges.  Frankly this theme is derailed - no one cares.

Latest UN News (16 June 2009) "World's megacities ripe for 'megadisaster': UN". So we may not have to worry about the "hidden" harm created by the city 24 hour day? Cities will be gone in forthcoming "megadisasters"?

A sustainable future is "melting away"? Folk in Uganda know what is happening - but do westerm politicians care? Frankly they don't give a damn, my dear!

Dark skies for the Adirondacks. Houston - we have a problem - light pollution.

A "no date", yet profound, missive from Ted Schaar "Artifical Lighting and Wildlife - A Moth to a Flame" "We have taken our use of artificial light to astonishing extremes with little thought given to how it might affect our fellow Earthlings. " Butterfly Cinservation have this "missive" about moth decline in the UK. One of its authors helped me with "Is light pollution killing our birds?" 3 years ago. No one has been listening and they are still not listening NOW!

You'll NOT like this? On this web site we want sustainability? Michael O'Leary (CEO Ryanair) is one of the people with his head up his arse. He claims that  "The best thing that we can do with environmentalists is shoot them." Obviously a member of the NRA? This quote  is on page 36 of David JC MacKay's book Sustainable Energy- without the hot air". Another example of those in power F*****G our future?

Reduce light pollution in 2009. Have you helped this campaign? Every little helps. Turn OFF UNNECESSARY light at night.

One fifth of us have lost the Milky way. Have a look at the comments HERE.

How about this idea? - The planet and its ecosystems place second to money and power? Leaders of the industrial world are apparently stalling so that the Arctic ice will melt. They can then start drilling for oil, gas and mineral wealth?  Makes you think. BTW rheindeer and caribou populations are in decline! Oh well nothing new. Never mind, with the ice and the polar bears gone, our gas prices won't cost us too much. Don't forget that global warming is melting the ice. YOU can reduce climate change by turning OFF UNNECESSARY light at night. Every little helps!

"Senators who opposed bill received top dollar from industry". This story refers to the tobacco industry which we all now know kills. Could this be the "new" reason that effective MLOs are being stopped? Remember that LAN is the "new" asbestos and the "new" DDT. Could the energy and lighting industry be paying "top dollar" as well to regulators? Remember that history repeats itself and that politicians, "public enemy number one" (according to author Colin Tudge) fail to learn from history. All very deja vue to me.

FOX News has just done a piece fronted by Bill Hemer and Megyn Kelly, on FOX and Friends (~3pm BST, Thursday 11 Jun 2009), that sleep deprivation is harming USA health! This was said in 1997 according to CNN? BTW the 24 hour day aids sleep deprivation. Is the 24 hour day killing off Life On Earth? Sounds familiar. We have had this here since the web site started in 2006.

More evidence of climate change. Scientists: Global Warming Has ALREADY Changed Oceans. Nothing new there then?

Vanishing Sacramento River Salmon - The Threat Of Light Pollution. You can read the story half way down the page. Didn't something similar happen to salmon in BC, Canada, a few years ago?

One-fifth of us have lost sight of Milky Way   Not seeing the Milky Way will be the least of our problems.

Now there's a thing? Birds In Decline At A Faster Rate! Gosh - what a surprise? BTW 2 years ago CNN reported that "coomon back garden birds " were in decline. Gosh - again! But don't forget that reasons were offered 112 years ago. No one cared then and now that it is happening even fewer really care, except for hair shirt nuts and environmentalists.

On a POI -  the RCEP will produce a short report  "Artifial Light In The Emvironment" this year, 2009. If you read its remit you will see that the CfDS handbook, out now, already covers the aspects to which the RCEP will address its report.

President Barak Obama is now on my side - neat huh? He wants to "get people to use less energy and to tackle climate change." It is comforting to know that he agrees with me. Sad that leaders & business owners think we're nuts. It would be far better if he said buy EVs and turn OFF UNNECESSARY lights at night. When I said that in a UK newspaper last year I was described as a "hair shirt environmentalist". Shows how stupid that was - I am anything but............!

Nurture forests and peatlands and combat global warming - more commonsense that politicians will ignore?

Dark Sky Sites In The UK - CLICK on where YOU live and see what you miss/can see? Thanks Daniel Nixon. (This link will be enabled when Dan has copyright approval)

More from TIME Magazine - What's Killing Chile's Coastal Wildlife. Remember that most humans live on Chile's coast.

VIDEO: Other people's take on light pollution. Just found this, although some videos are old, it is a nice compilation.

TIME Magazine - The Anatomy Of A Silent Crisis: Climate Change. So reduce climate change by turning OFF UNNECESSARY night light!

Homer Glen and images of Earth Hour 2009 - compare the before and during/after images.

The 24 hour day - is it killing off biodiversity? Astronomers, not seeing the Milky Way, will be the least of our problems when sustainable life fails?  Please remember that Sir David Attenborough once said "Insects, we would do well to remember them!". Well frankly we have not and we will face payment of the price for future failure? Fish stocks are in decline and oceans are acidifying. Politicians really are public enemy number one (Colin Tudge).

Responses to “Light Pollution Affects Us All” Graham Cliff Says: September 25th, 2007 at 4:55 pm  You can learn even more about light pollution and its “hidden” devastating effects at this web site  http://www.lightpollution.org.uk
Learn that LP kills bugs. Good you might say - we can sit out at night (with a cold beer in summer) and not be irritated. But bugs are at the base of the food chain.  Without insects to eat, higher order animals will go into decline. Flora will suffer because of fewer insects to pollinate flowers. A vicious circle of decline. But no-one cares. By the time they do care it will be ”just too late”!

Americans may find this interesting? The old Russia faces huge challenges in the next decade to avoid the worst ravages of climate change So the USA will again beat  Communism by killing it off (and the rest of the world) with their profligate capitalist waste, their banking incompetence and their systemic political ignorance? I despair. BTW the harm is already being done, so make sure that you live where food supply and water are "guaranteed"?

And things are just going from bad to WORSE - 40 years until the collapse of world fish stocks and climate talks must tackle ocean acidification. Will politicians never learn, never listen? When wil they ever learn, when will they ever learn? Apparently consumer ignorance is also to blame - Telegraph, 1 June 2009.

You might have read the Challenge article which started this web site but have you read the latest issue, Challenge, Summer 2009? It tells stories about light reduction in Romsey, Winchester, UK amd Gothenberg, Sweden. The penny is beginning to drop?

Public Asked To Help Monitor Life On Earth. ABC News..........    Perhaps they need to learn what we  know, that the 24 hour day day is killing off Life On Earth already?

ABC News: Earth 2100- "The Final Century Of Civilisation?". You heard it here first - the problem is that all the facts are there, and very widespread, the only thing is, those in power have their heads in the sand or up their a***s?

One for the "oldies", this from the 60s -  a continuing theme of the " Eve of Destruction", by P. F. Sloan and sung by Barry McGuire. Just read the lyrics!

"..hair shirt environmentalists (aka People Who Care)..." can read more about environmental concerns at the Guardian HERE.

Police back street light black-out (BBC News). Perhaps they have spoken to Inspector John Mitchell, of Auckland, New Zealand, whose crime rate fell to ZERO during a blackout? Read about Blackouts and Crime, near the foot of the page.

Climate change disasters kill 300,000 a year. And 300,000 will be only the beginning? So turn off UNNECESSARY night lighting, reduce fossil fuel demand and do YOUR bit to help. You know it makes sense - or do you?

Cuckoos and Lapwings now on UK Red List  (of the IUCN?).   The BBC had this web site in 2006 discussing a 50% decline in lapwings then.    Insectivores in decline - sounds familiar? "Is light pollution killing our birds?" Why are naturalists not joining up the dots - are they just too narrow minded and parochial? I hope not. By the time they wake up it may be JTL. I certainly hope not, once again.

Paul Hawken's Commencement Address to the Class of 2009, University of Portland, "Ralph Waldo Emerson once asked what we would do if the stars only came out once every thousand years. No one would sleep that night, of course. The world would become religious overnight. We would be ecstatic, delirious, made rapturous by the glory of God. Instead the stars come out every night, and we watch television." Kinda sad - huh? The address goes on to describe the future failure that new grad students face, created by their forebears. At least these kids will have the benefit of hindsight?

Our good friend Francis Parnell sends these "missives" 1) Permafrost melt pose long term threat, 2) Study Cites "slow-motion" Threat To Permafrost and 3)  Climate Health costs: bug-borne ills and killer heat. Don't forget that every little helps - so turn off UNNECESSARY light at night. Help to reduce LAN! You know it makes sense - or do YOU?

Below we mention the Butterfly Conservation pamphlet "The state of Britain's larger moths". On page 26 one can read that "Increasing light pollution is another potential cause of change to moth populations."  When will other consrvationists ever learn the "hidden" harm of LAN and the 24 hour day?

US wants to paint the world white. If this was part of a proper energy conservation strategy then MAYBE but this is only an attention grabbing headline - sad?

New Hampshire, in the USA, has a new Act relative to outdoor lighting efficiency. It states that ".. the total annual savings would be about $925,000." Good on yer New Hampshire for taking common sense ideas on board.  I hope that the savings will not go on "expenses"?

Midnight Movie: Does Las Vegas Care About Their Light Pollution? Dan Duriscoe talks more about the domes of wasted energy over Vegas. Perhaps these domes should be charging our EVs?

These are from 2006, but they are still relevant today. The Technical, Social and  Wildlife Aspects of Light Pollution.  Nothing is new.

Given my concerns below, about politicians, people should not get the idea that ALL politicians are weak and immoral - they are not. It is that just too many of the most powerful fill that bill? Many, like Chris Davies, MEP, Graham Watson, MEP, Robert Key, MP and Lembit Opik, MP try their very best to support the environment and our astronomical concerns.

Climate change and the USA is just not jumping high enough?  - MEF say that we are jumping as high as the political system will tolerate. By politicians not jumping high enough our future really will be JTL and politicians are to blame - so now you know. US Envoy admits to future failure. Its nice to know who is to blame, isn't it?

Food for thought from a noted food expert- "Politicians are public enemy number ONE!" Just 1 minute into this video, Colin Tudge tells it as it is. It is not just expenses, the economy and terrorism - it is our survival and that of Life On Earth. Heard this before? Of course you have.

And there's more - Colin says that "The powers-that-be really have lost the plot. Simply to follow their lead, to accept the status quo, and to contrive to plug ourselves in, to the system they have evolved, is suicide!" This is the very last sentence of Colin's book "Feeding People Is Easy", Pari Publishing, 2007. It makes one despair that politicians are so intellectually weak and immoral?

Is the 24 hour day killing off Life On Earth? - version 3  Light pollution, making it impossible for anyone to see the Milky Way, will be the least of our problems, in the future that we are failing NOW? A bit like failure in Wall Street and the mother of Parliaments?

Just look at what you miss in the cities. A night, time lapse star party in Texas. Neat- huh? I suspect that there were 2 fleeting meteors?

An update to the background of the story below. - "Where have all the flowers gone" Words and music by Pete Seeger. A friend in the pub last night (20 May 2009) thought that it was The Seekers.

Where have Britain's moths gone? Gone to graveyards everyone? Surely killed by LAN - the  "new" DDT.  When will they ever learn, when will they evverr.. learn? Francis Parnell tells me that this lyric was from Peter, Paul and Mary. He comments that " When it comes to LP, it looks as if they won't (do anything).  Their minds are "blowin' in the wind." - Bob Dylan. The old ones are the best? Sad that modern politicians are so intellectually feeble? Are they really "without equivocation, public enemy number one?"

A timely reminder for New Yorkers. Circadian Disruption and Cancer.

UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, today (5.30 pm, 19 May 2009), said that the cornerstone of Parliament should be an independent regulatory authority. Self regulations does not work. Hear, hear. It did not work in Parliament, self regulation did not work in banking and Wall Street and it will not work in the lighting industry, which is driven by greed and ignorance. By the time that LAN has been perceived to be the "new "ashestos and the "new" DDT, it will be JTL.  Some lighting engineers know this, but just like the banking industry their cautionary fears are dismissed as irrational. The crisis will come and once again we will see crisis management. Very sad?

More hot air from the C40 failures.  They did nothing after NY 2007, Kyoto was a waste of time and so too will Seoul 2009?

Let There Be Night? A survey by USA students (year 3 to 8) observing the stars of Orion.  The results are very sad for me, because I remember Orion as a kid 50 years ago. I rarely see it now.

ABC News with Charlie Gibson (19 May 2009) reported on the BBC News Channel now (1.40am) - NEW CARS TO MEET STRINGENT ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS? Hope at last that we may face a sustainable future? BTW the story that I really liked was the Seattle banker saving a brood of 12 ducks. Not all bankers are "you know whats"?

I have just discovered that if you live in the UK, as climate change melts the polar land ice, that you make sure that you do NOT live in London, near the Wash in East Anglia or in the Yorkshire Dales. You may well be flooded out.

US Speliologists Really Upset That NE USA Caves To Close - apparently? The US Forest Service blame WNS (White Nose Syndrome - apparently). I ask the question "How about too few bugs, since 1897, to feed the bats that are suffering from WNS?" The problem of bats, insects and LAN can be read HERE.

Dark Skies 15,300 - Light Pollution 0     This from Sky & Telescope.

OUR LUMINOUS WORLD - Sinking in Light -  Protecting the night sky. Yeah, go for it!

Arctic Ice in 5 years will be completely gone in the summer months. BBC News 24 5pm 14 May 2009 on UK live TV. Pen Hadow said that the ice thickness was only half what had been predicted - it would be gone in summer so making the search for North Pole fossil fuel possible?

Doctors now agree that global warming will harm human health. So slow warming by reducing energy waste and turn OFF UNNECESSARY LIGHT AT NIGHT. Sadly I do not think that politicans will listen - they will continue with their heads in the sand (or is that the trough?).

The approaching climate change time bomb? Franis Parnell tells me of this story which comes from ABC.

To keep global warming low, deeper pollution cuts are needed. So will we now see Light Pollution/Light at Night reduced? You can bet your bottom dollar that the politicians will keep their heads in their sand!

Climate change blamed for floods AND drought in Brazil: Brasilian President Lula. And so on.

Struth - it's getting worse "Climate change could sting asthma, allergy sufferers?"

We discuss, 4 items below, Peter Strasser, a director  of the IDA , discussing the extent to which light pollution causes problems, and NOT just for "nerd" astronomers. Earthday TV has the video of him saying much more HERE. At the bottom, click on "Green Living" and then when the next page comes up, and at top right, click on the 9 minute interview "Keep Our Skies Dark". Personally I recommend Pete Strasser for IDA President and not just a director. Well done man - Yes!

Light At Night (LAN) - the "new" DDT? The LA Times, in 1897, described that "The fear is expressed, that when England is lighted from one end to the other with electricity the song birds will die out from the failure of their food supply". Now that it appears to be actually happening (in the USA) no one cares? Sad.

Light At Night - Promote The Facts And Not The Myths? Some commonly expressed misconceptions.

Light Pollution - this time from FOX News.  Part 2 is HERE. The CfDS, of the UK's BAA, has produced a handbook "Blinded by the Light?" outlining the many effects, caused by the light at night of the 24 hour day, now being recognised as potentially harmful. We have already lost the night, and so whip-poor-wills and many other nocturnal creatures are not happy. The circadian disruption, caused by shift work, is perhaps hazardous as well and perhaps more than we realise? So maybe the natural environment, our health and with the money waste our pocket books may well be compromised? Not seeing the stars will be the least of our worries.

Just discovered the Leonard Lopate Show from New York - 8/8/8 - Please Explain: Light Pollution. Hear Peter Strasser, IDA, and Dr. Richardsd Stevens discuss the "hidden" harm. You can even add your comments to the debate.Someone added this comment - "I just spent 4 weeks in rural Ohio where we see the Milky Way all the time. Some of the West Coast kids there thought it was air pollution. Sad." Very sad but true. West (and East) Coast kids have a very sad future?

Global warming's toll: Glacier in Bolivia is already gone. How many more will disappear before world leaders take their heads out of the sand?

Constant Sun - too much of a good thing? Apparently life in the north can be bad? In the land of the midnight Sun suicide is common place. This is not new - Dr. Helena Hakko  published her Ph. D. thesis 9 years ago, in 2000 which high lighted this fact. No one cared then and no one cares now. Sounds familiar? BTW the 24 hour day is killing off Life On Earth? And no one continues to care, certainly not the politicians, who want to maintain the status quo.

If you have read the pdf that was the reason for this web site you will know that house sparrows need insects - read that the UK DEFRA believe this too. Only they do not say so up front - they "seem" to suggest that a problem exists. Other describe it as "mysterious"?  Please help to sustain UK house sparrows. You know that it makes sense - or do you? DEFRA say in this document  that "there seem to be fewer insects around to feed the chicks." Have you heard this before? It actually goes back to 1897 - no one cared then and no one cares now. Once again we really will be JTL?

A YAHOO Internet search from Syracuse, NY, USA - "If we don't have power in the world then what happen(s)?" Some very interesting comments here. One comment was that "Earth becomes a hell to live" - hence the need for renewables and energy conservation. You know it makes sense - or do you?

"If the (global) warming continues, millions of people in western China will face floods in the short term and drought in the long run." So don't add to global warming - turn off unnecessary lights!

Portuguese climbers to show (global) warming by measuring glaciers. YES but will anyone take notice? I seriously doubt it. Once again we face a JTL future?

Politicians, like Nero, "fiddle", whilst the world "burns"? We really may be JTL? An area of an Antarctic ice shelf almost the size of New York City has broken into icebergs. So nothing new then? BUT the poluticians do no more than TALK!

France under threat from climate change. And with American antipathy to France, more Americans will leave their lights on at night, to speed up climate chnage, just  like so many  Americans did during World Earth Hour this March?

"Biodiversity and ecosystem services are critical for regulating our climate." And the 24 hour day, caused by light at night (LAN/LP), is a major part of the ongoing problem which is TOTALLY ignored. Just like the "passive" harm, done by smoking and the "passive" harm, done by involuntary exposure to asbestos, LAN may well be the "new" asbestos? At least if you have accessed this web site you are aware so please ask those city fathers in your local authority if their insurer will cover the litigation and compensation costs of claims for "passive", involuntary, exposure to light at night "causing" ill health?

Please listen to this man. He knows the way forward which will be sustainable. To ignore his advocacy will be a recipe for future failure? Can we live a future which we persist in failing today? I hope not.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson issued a proposed ruling that global warming pollution "endangers" Americans' health and well-being. Today's action sets the stage for using authority under the Clean Air Act to establish national emission standards for large global warming emitters. "Emissions standards". I hope that they will involve PM1s and UFPs.They have been ignored by legislators for decades. I know - I used to analyse them with AEM (Analytical Electron Microscopy). Update, midnight BST, 17-Apr-09. Apparently only GHGs will be under consideration and NOT PM1s and UFPs - once again we fail because our managers are crap - a bit like Wall Street and Government in general?

Climate change could worsen African "megadroughts"? So turn OFF unnecessary lights at night and charge your EV with the energy currently wasted created overnight baseload capacity? Sounds simple doesn't it? Pity the politicians are too simple to realise?

UK Governemnt to subsidise EVs that we can charge at night at no cost if we stop unnecessary street lighting? But will they see that obvious logic? I doubt it. Keith Buchan of the MTRU, London, cannot see this now - how will Governement see?

Author of "Once there was a sky full of stars" Bob Crelin talks about Earth Hour at Yale, USA.

Hello

Guidance for the reduction of obtrusive lighting. From the UK's ILE . Thanks guys.

Just watched Joanna Lumley "In the Land of the Northern Lights"seeing the Aurora Borealis from northern Norway (BBC2 TV 6 :15pm UK, Monday 29 Dec 2008 and only for 7 days on iPlayer)  You will see the aurora some 48-49 minutes into the programme. Just fantastic. A life long ambition. Sad that others just see Aurora "Bognor Regis", like Sir Patrick Moore who lives in Selsey.

Dr. John Mason says this in his LP video. Others just see light pollution/light at night - LAN/LP. Sad, very sad that kids cannot see real stars (and aurora) and believe them only to be SFX.

In the Dark about Light Pollution? Get enlightened. From 2007 but still good.

Does architectural lighting contribute to breast cancer? So if it does don't unnecessarily light buildings at night and hence help to reduce global warming.

Absolutely NOTHING to do with LP/LAN and environmentalism. I have just watched a FAME reunion programme on UK Channel 4 TV. Fantastic - everyone can live forever.  How sad that our future now is so compromised?

"Climate change will increase concentrations of tropospheric ozone,... which would increase morbidity and mortality,..." So help reduce global warming by turning OFF unnecessary light at night.

New Year Resolution idea? Turn OFF unnecessary lights and maybe help to stop Himalayan village global warming and their glaciers melting back?

German Innovation - Street Lighting By SMS - neat huh?

Swiss glaciers in full retreat - BBC News.  So slow global warming by turning OFF unnecessary lights.

Global Warming Might Cook Up Too Many Male Fish...a rise of 7 Fahrenheit degrees predicted by some (climate change) models for the end of the century would yield three males for every female, a ratio unfavorable for maintaining populations.  - So reduce waste energy which contributes to global warming by turning OFF unnecessary light at night.

Let's reduce light pollution in 2009? A very good idea for International Year of Astronomy 2009.

Arctic ice melting at alarming rates?  So switch off unnecessary LAN?

Professor Gerhard Eisenbeis (Rich and Longcore, page 283)- 'Insects are sucked out of habitat areas (by LAN) as if by a vacuum, which may deplete local populations (of insects)....... Kolligs(2000) (this URL link  does not access the reference itself - sadly none exists) found that the insects captured on each side of the greenhouse (studied) reflected habitat conditions on that side, providing evidence of the "vacuum cleaner" effect.' -  Please realise that LAN/LP is maybe harming us, our environment and maybe compromising our long term future? Sadly, if we are not JIT we may well be JTL?

Obama left with little time to cure global warming - Then how about turning off unnecessary lights to help?

NIEHS-funded scientists have also demonstrated that night-time exposure to artificial light can stimulate the growth of human breast tumors in mice by suppressing the levels of a key hormone called melatonin.

Common birds in decline.

"Since 1967 the average population of the common birds in steepest decline has fallen by 68 percent; some individual species nose-dived as much as 80 percent. All 20 birds on the national Common Birds in Decline list lost at least half their populations in just four decades."  Wow - you don't say, nothing new there then and LAN had nothing to do with it? Frankly I don't believe it.

BBC TV today 19-Nov-2008. I have just heard that 3 big USA car companies are looking for a "bail out"? The reporter described them as "not paying attention to innovation" or words to that effect. May I remind folk that GM had the EV1 10 years ago. It is NOT that they failed to innovate - instead they became complacent and didn't bother to support innovation? With the EV1 charging at night, with unnecessary lights switched off you wake up to a car that does not pollute when you commute and power station engineers happy?

Read that we should charge our EVs at night and switch off LAN?

WEH - World Earth Hour is upcoming next March 2009. Someone today in the Philippines did a SEARCH and came back to this web site to view the Sydney EH composite from 2007 - neat huh?

BTW If you read below that I am concerned that we do not conserve, that instead we waste profligately, how about this for a new story? Water will be in short supply by 2080. Maybe I will be dead but my relatives will not.

Am I stupid or what? Why do we always hear discussion of energy provision? We waste far too much anyway - why do I not hear of conservation, conservation and more conservation? Switch off unnecessary lights at night - don't cause unnecessary LAN

Blinded by the Light? A handbook explaining some of the concerns which surround the 24 hour day caused by light at night -LAN.  This is the frontispiece to the CfDS handbook which is now in pre-print. It is hoped that publication will appear soon - in the New Year at the latest.

Homer Glen leads the World and its City Fathers Agree

This page section is under development but it shows residents and leaders of Homer Glen, a village in the conurbation of the city of Chicago, in Illinois, USA. Debra Norvil (cream jacket) has got back the names of folk in the picture line up to me (see caption details below). Homer Glen joined in with the rest of the World to attempt to make energy saving and sustainability a tangible reality. Homer Glen followed Sydney, Australia on the 1st birthday of Earth Hour 2007 to attempt to draw attention to the extent to which we WASTE energy every day and night. A 24 hour day problem in this global village? San Francisco ended with the Golden Gate having its floodlights turned off but the roadway lights, of course, were left illuminated. In short Home Glen turned off UNNECESSARY lighting which is all that EH (Earth Hour) is all about. I am looking forward to WEH next year, 2009 (World Earth Hour, 2009). Tell YOUR city fathers that if their township didn't join in then they will be responsible for future failure. Homer Glen made the effort this year and will continue to do so. Will your city leaders do the same?

Picture figure captions -  L to R:  Illinois Lt. Governor Pat Quinn, Homer Glen Mayor James Daley, Homer Glen Trustee Russell Knaack, Homer Glen Trustee Margaret Sabo, Debra Norvil, Bob Gent IDA, and IDA Illinois Section Leader At Large Dave Toeppen.

Somehow if others didn't join in this year then I guess that they will not bother next year. Sad isn't it? But it is real nice that Homer Glen knows the way forward.

The energy which we waste at night, illuminating the night sky, should be powering our Electric Vehicles. It does not because of corporate incompetence?

Please be kind enough to read "The City Domes of Wasted Energy Which Should Be Charging Our EVs"

Bill Moore, editor of EV World, has placed a link to this article HERE. It can be found about halfway down this EVW page under the title "Light Pollution and Plug-In Electric Vehicles".

What is 'Light Pollution'? See here ... LP - THE MOVIE!

Light pollution is simply light that is having a bad effect on the environment. You can watch a WMV movie video explaining "The Problem?" by clicking HERE. The major effects are:

  • Wasted light means wasted energy that means unnecessary carbon emissions
  • Nocturnal insects are affected. Animals which depend on these insects for food are then affected.
  • A comprehensive guide can be found in " Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting" by Catherine Rich and Travis Longcore. ISBN 1-55963-128-7 ISLAND PRESS 2006 £20.78. A brief review of this book can be seen at http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/summary/312/5770/56
  • The beauty of the night sky is lost - when is the last time you REALLY saw the stars in all their glory?
  • WE ARE ALL HEARING OF OUR CARBON FOOTPRINTS! WHAT ABOUT OUR SKYPRINTS? Light Pollution is stamping its "footprint" across our night sky and blotting out our views of the stars and the Milky Way. Should we be concerned with our Skyprints which waste energy and pollute the night sky with unwanted light and wasted energy? Why do we tolerate this? Ask your city fathers.
  • If you are a member of an astronomical society then download the videos below and show them at your meetings. His ADOBE pdf presentation can be accessed from HERE. This 50MB PDF will take about 3-4 minutes to download on broadband connections. The video of his lecture is now completed and is a 41MB WMV file which is now downloadable from the link above.  It lasts 1/2 hour but is good enough quality AND CONTENT to justify watching. (Download times for broadband are 3-4 minutes. Dial-up will be too long.) It is informative and even humourous! You will enjoy it and find that it even educates. The purpose of this website

Light pollution is unnecessary and can be controlled with very simple measures that cost very little. We aim to show you how YOU can make a difference and how YOU can improve your local environment. Remember that light at night needs to be enough to meet the need, it needs to be where it is wanted and at the time that it is wanted and it needs to be no more than will do the job! Turn off light at night (and at any other time) if there is no need for electric light? Switch it off! Do not waste energy! Do not warm planet Earth! Do not add to global warming!

You know it makes sense? Or do you? Please do not be blind to that which you cannot see! The "hidden" effects of LP? This is a life experience for so many politicians - those in our world who are so blind that they WILL not see!

The main points

Here are some points about light pollution and its effects.
  1. Insects are at the base of the food chain for many animals including bats, birds, frogs, lizards and many small mammals.
  2. Nocturnal insects are drawn to bright light. This can kill them or distract them from breeding which means fewer insects for other animals to eat.
  3. Holland has the worst light pollution in the EU. It has the lowest biodiversity as well.
  4. In global terms, 19% of all electricity used produces light at night. The 24 hour day! There is NO circadian rhythm. What will be the further consequences of this problem?
  5. Improving street lighting at ground level can save local councils and city authorities many millions each year. It can also reduce carbon emissions by a significant amount.
  6. The glow of wasted light over our towns and cities means that we have lost the night sky - an important part of our environment.
  7. Light pollution is a "green" issue and those organisations concerned about the environment, as well as the astronomical community, should be involved in combating the problem. (JBAA, 104, 6, 1994).

All the best, web site manager Graham Cliff

This web site's tracking software is returning evidence that browsers want to know "who is Graham Cliff". Although very flattering "Graham Cliff" as such will not take a GOOGLE search very far. If you have read the pdf "Is Light Pollution Killing Our Birds" you will know that I am a retired Analytical Electron Microscopist (AEM). So what I hear you say! Well my wife, Pauline, tells friends that "I know my place". This is because my goal in AEM was to analyse atoms and yet I am an amateur astronomer and so I know the scale of our Universe - hence I know my place? I took over a job from Margaret Beckett (nee Jackson) in 1971 at Manchester University. She was until recently the Foreign Secretary of the UK. My colleague Gordon Lorimer and I were interviewed, by BBC political correspondent Michael Crick, about Margaret as a person, when John Smith in 1995 died and she then led the Labour Party before Tony Blair. We had to be "economical with the truth". If you have bothered to get to here then access GOOGLE scholar, key in Cliff and Lorimer and read on. You should find about 2190 (at 5-12-2007, it was 1490 on 11-10-2007) references to my work in AEM (now 3190 as of 6 March 2009 and now 4150 on 7 Jun 2009)). This work from 1975, in AEM, has been described as a citation index "classic". (This pdf, for the curious, is 1.5MB). Very flattering once again but it was based on good common sense science. Light pollution is neither good nor driven by common sense. Please get on board and help Sir David Attenborough save Planet Earth for our kids and their future. You know that it makes sense? Or do you?

All the rest is history.

If you are an historian how about this 3 MB pdf? It includes Sir Patrick Moore's signature on my Wilkins and Moore "Handbook for Telescope Making", Tony Bradshaw with his "REAL" telescope at Jodrell Bank and an image of ME with Tony's scope on the ADAS observatory roll-off roof,  before light pollution wrecked astronomy in Timperley!

Astronomy Now used it May, 1992. Small world isn't it?

David Eicher used the same image as a front page cover on one of his books years ago (the other picture here is from my video projector's intro screen shot. I am standing on a TV weather map in the Albert Dock, Liverpool, England. My jacket I bought in Salt Lake City, after my wife photographed me in a book store holding David Eicher's book with my image on its front cover)

The store in Salt Lake City had a Wilson's Leather  shop. The store with David Eicher's book sold telescopes. I hope that Salt Lakers patronize these stores.

BTW the guys in the photo of 4 (now aged) astronomers are me, Colin Henshaw (co-discoveror of supernova 1987A ), Robin Scagell, President of the SPA and Professor Ian Morison of Jodrell Bank, Radio Telescope Observatory, of the University of Manchester, UK)

If you have bothered to read to here then look at Graham, Colin and Fred Talbot, when they were only 18 in 1968 in the pdf HERE

Enjoy it, if you can, in this unsustainable, light polluted, badly managed world!

Sad that I am so cynical, isn't it? Can anyone offer me sustainable hope for our future?

I added this 1.5MB pdf image to add to my "ego", which of course I do not have(?). I appear in 1994 with academic colleagues at the inauguration of the Lehigh 300kV STEM/AEM which achieved atom analysis resolution in 1996, a year later than I predicted in Boston in 1992 when I received the MAS/EMSA Presidential Award. My wife likes to tell friends that as an electron microscopist and astronomer "I know my place".

Have YOUR Photo Opportunity To Have Your Say.

A web page Light Pollution photo gallery has been in place now for just over a year(?). Its home page is at http://www.librapix.com/lightpollution/

It has images from activist anti-LP members motivated to bother to take a photo of an LP (or a light energy wastage) problem and to then post it. Not quite a YOUTUBE of LP but then LP is not very dynamic. Some of these photos are worthy of despair and distress. I like(?) numbers 1, 19&22, 45, 48, 59&60 (which are "ironic"), 72, 86, 89 and so on.

Please be inclined to post your own. Maybe if you live outside the UK you could ask that a WORLD Gallery be created? You could even create your own. That reminds me - Is there already a World LP gallery site? What is its URL? Please get back if you know of one and I will post it here. Enjoy, or not, as the case may be - more irony.
