Is light pollution killing our birds? - Challenge magazine, Summer 2006.

The Environmental Effects of Light Pollution - a letter to the JBAA, 104, May, 1994 by Colin Henshaw (who co-discovered SN1987A).

Colin's letter was written in 1994 and ALL his predictions are coming to pass!

We are now experiencing Colin's future of 1994 today! The future's problems are already here! We don't need to go back to the future - the future is HERE now! Wake up people, open your eyes and see the future. You are living it NOW! Someone who agrees with Colin wrote an article in 1996. He is Professor Art Upgren whose article was published in Amicus magazine. He wrote of the Starless Night - Light Pollution extinguishes the Stars! This information was provided by YAHOO OLFer Francis Parnell. You once could read an excerpt HERE at (which now fails) http://www.utne.com/cgi-bin/udt/im.display.printable?client.id=utne_web_specials&story.id=666

See the web pages listed below! Colin's letter was prompted by space expert Robin Scagell's remarks to the CfDS about light pollution affecting the mating habits of glow-worms! Robin has a Glow-Worm web site at :- http://website.lineone.net/~galaxypix/

BATS AT RISK.... http://www.bats.org.uk/ There are 17 species of bat in the UK, all of which are protected by law because their numbers have decreased so dramatically. The effect of lighting on bats is discussed HERE from 2008. The latest about the harm that is being done -  Shedding Light On Bat Behaviour - Emma Stone, Bristol University.  You can listen and watch Emma discuss her research at the Armagh Dark Sky Symposium HERE.

SPARROWS AT RISK.... http://www.bto.org/appeals/house_sparrow.htm Missing! - Ten Million House Sparrows http://www.physorg.com/news10563.html British scientists say they might have determined why the house sparrow, Britain's most familiar bird, has been vanishing. Sadly of course they may be wrong! Sparrows are dying out because there are too few insects to feed sparrow chicks and so they just starve. An English journal suggested that the same may have been true for English songbirds in 1897. Many birds are now in decline as a fact, apparently?

AMPHIBIANS AT RISK.... http://www.muskokaheritage.org/ecology-night/sharon-wise.asp artificial night lighting has the potential to disrupt normal activity and behaviour of nocturnal amphibians .

http://www.froglife.org/ Froglife is a national wildlife charity concerned with the protection of Britain’s amphibians and reptiles, all of which are increasingly under threat.

PLANTS AT RISK.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4522787.stm

Of 1,756 plant types, about 20% are currently threatened with extinction. Here at http://www.plantlife.org.uk/uk/plantlife-saving-species-under-our-care-ajuga-chamaepitys.htm  there is no discussion of LP! I ask if PlantLife have even thought of its effects on plants? Time will tell?

INSECTS AT RISK.... http://www.buglife.org.uk/conservation/ We know that many species are in decline, and significant numbers of species are definitely or feared to be extinct. There is a great deal at stake!

MOTHS AT RISK..... the moth population of Britain is in serious decline, causing concern for the future of many species of birds, bats and several small mammals that feed on them. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,,1820065,00.html

GLOW_WORMS AT RISK????????.... http://website.lineone.net/~galaxypix/ there is no firm evidence that this (light pollution) does cause a decline. However, most glow-worm sites are in dark areas and this suggests that lights do cause a decline. Robin Scagell has moved his site to HERE - http://www.glowworms.org.uk/ You can watch him talking about glow worms, from 1993 at Reading University, HERE.

Artificial Night Lighting and Human Health

It has been argued for many years that light pollution reduces melatonin production at night and thereby increases the propensity for breast and prostate cancers!

Light at night appears to be real harmful to human health.  -  Wikipedia says so.

This from Vienna August 2008 light at night kills - LAN KILLS?

See here .. http://www.geocities.com/eric74382000/bc.htm

LATEST NEWS A recent report has raised questions about LP and breast cancer again. You can read this at this site http://www.healthnewsdigest.com/news/Cancer_Issues_660/What_is_light_pollution_Is_it_Really_a_Factor_in_Breast_Cancer.shtml

Similarly premature babies can be affected by LP! See here...

Night brightness is co-incident with breast cancer, but not lung cancer, in the female population of Israel.

The CfDS web site has an extremely good synopsis of the potential harm to health being done by the 24 hour day HERE. I was particularly alarmed by the reports about suicide being worse in Finland in summer during the days of near 24 hour natural daylight. The harm is being done already and we had not realised it?

Lighting and Crime!

BTW we are told that street lights also make s driving "safer at night" Read this. Streetlights and driving - "Light from ... street lights makes it harder for you to see the road ahead." So now you know that street lighting does NOT make it safer to drive at night? Very curious.

This from Barry Clarke, Australia, Lighting and Crime:No Real Benefit?

This "LATEST" however is from 1977 - to be found from Homer Glen's page HERE

(This page provides links to another page HERE).

The "Majority of Crimes" occur during the day and in lighted environments.
In 1977, the US Department of Justice set out to evaluate the relationship between lighting and crime, and concluded in their Phase I Final Report:- “there is a strong indication that increased lighting . . .only decreases the fear of crime”
(National Institute of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, July 1977).

Carry this to its natural conclusion.
The logic then is we can conclude that people expose themselves to risk because they FALSELY believe that street lighting PREVENTS crime or at the very least REDUCES crime.
What actually happens is that people put themselves at risk and criminals can better commit their crimes. QED?

Street lighting is perhaps the cause of crime and criminality being as widespread as it now appears to be.
Food for thought.

And there's more -

The principal conclusion is that no evidence could be found to support the hypothesis that "improved" street lighting reduces reported crime.

You can read the CfDS web pages on Lighting and Crime HERE. Read HERE for a synopsis of its content. Designed for the "uninitiated"!

A more modern pdf version of a Conclusion Summary Synopsis of the HORS 251 Government report on lighting and crime can be found HERE. (18 February 2008, as we learn today more about the lies of the September Dossier - another Government report). See below.

The author would welcome any explanation of any errors which MAY be contained in this document, especially from the authors of HORS 251.

See below where you can link to the pdf of "HORS 251 Improved Street Lighting and Crime". Before that read Paul Marchant's comments following this paragraph  and try out this first draft of a conclusion synopsis for the "uninitiated" to help them understand why HORS 251 fails.

Please take time to read HORS 251 and its conclusions. Taken out of context this can show that lighting reduces crime by up to 30%. Please examine the qualifications and the caveats contained in the summary. Then realise that this is vacuous government speak with echoes of the 45 minutes of the September Dossier. Written for government to by pass the truth? Do not forget that the September "Dodgy" Dossier took us to war!

You can read HORS 251 from  here... http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs2/hors251.pdf

Burglary Victim Talks

KOTV - 5/17/2007 8:13 PM - Updated 5/17/2007 10:58 PM

A woman who woke up and found a man in her house is talking about her frightening ordeal. She HAD SEVERAL LIGHTS ON (sic) and was asleep in the front room, but NONE OF THAT DETERRED THE BURGLAR.

More proof that lighting does NOT prevent crime?

Everyone "KNOWS" that lighting prevents crime and more light reduces it further?

Information on how turning off lights at night has decreased vandalism in several school districts can be found in this article from Peninsula School District #401 in Gig Harbor, Washington.

See here as well...

Waste of money

As well as affecting humans, insects, bats, birds, amphibians and small mammaals, badly directed streetlighting affects the night sky, blotting it out and making the stars invisible. All that light going UP into the sky is wasted light which means wasted electricity and therefore wasted money. Light pollution is increasing global warming.

The FIRST web site to address Light Pollution issues!

This web page at NELPAG is the first web site to raise issues of light pollution.

Please take the time to read its content and learn how old this problem is!
